Description

On a shield-shaped embroidered item 3 1/4 inches (8.26 cm) in height and 2 9/16 inches (6.51 cm) in width at top and 2 3/16inches (5.56 cm) in width at base overall, blazoned as follows: Quarterly Celeste and Azure (Dark Blue) a griffin sergeant Brn, grasping in dexter paw a key bendwise Or, floating above the sinister paw a sphere Argent, gridlined and fimbriated of the second; all within a Yellow 1/8 inch (.32 cm) border


Symbolism
Oriental blue and yellow are the colors traditionally used by Military Intelligence units. The shape of the shield pays homage to the Military Intelligence Readiness Command shoulder sleeve insignia. The background quartered in light and dark colors (day and night), suggests the importance of constant vigilance. The griffin, a mythological creature of exceeding alertness and acute hearing, symbolizes qualities necessary to the Military Intelligence mission. Facing west, the griffin illustrates the Brigades alignment to U.S. Pacific Command(PACOM). The globe refers to the Brigades expeditionary reach capability. The key alludes to the skill of finding and controlling hidden information

Description
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/8 inches (3.49 cm) in width consisting of a silver ring containing a disc divided into quarters alternately from upper left of silver gray and black centered in front of two blue griffins seated back to back all upon a horizontal silver platform, the griffins each holing in a claw at chest level the upper fold of a silver scroll curving downward in three folds, the smaller fold centered below the platform and the scroll inscribed in black letters with the motto WATCHFUL AND VIGILANT one word on each fold the free ends draped below either end of the platform.

Symbolism
Oriental blue and silver gray are the colors used for Military Intelligence. The griffin, a mythological creature of exceeding alertness and acute hearing, represents qualities necessary to the Military Intelligence mission. The scroll held in his claws alludes to the assimilation of Military Intelligence data and the disc at center, quartered in light and dark colors representing day and night, suggests the importance of constant vigilance. The silver circle refers to the State of Ohio, the home area of the unit when it was activated.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 259th Military Intelligence Group on 20 September 1971. It was redesignated effective 16September 2016, for the 259th Military Intelligence Brigade and amended to update the description and symbolism.
